In celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March, we proudly feature interviews with resilient women who embody social, economic, cultural and professional achievements. These women are wonderful examples of 2021’s campaign theme: Choose to Challenge. A challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge, comes change. Their stories highlight the importance and power of women supporting women and how their rise to success was made possible through the upliftment of others.

What is your background, what industry do you work in now, and how long have you worked in this industry?
I qualified as an audiologist and speech therapist from Pretoria University at the end of 2011. In 2012 I completed my year of community service work at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. In 2013 and 2014 I worked as an audiologist at a private practice. In 2015 I opened Candice van Heerden Audiology and we have now been running for 6 successful years. The last 6 years has seen the practice grow from strength to strength and we now have two branches from which we practice.

What do you love about what you do?
I get to change the lives of my patients and their families daily. I spend my day interacting with the most interesting people and they have taught me so much personally, spiritually and emotionally over the years. Most importantly I help my patients re-establish connections with their loved ones and enjoy life to its fullest.
What are the professional and/or personal achievements you’re most proud of?
I graduated with an honours degree in not only audiology, but in speech language therapy too. To open and run a successful practice over the last 6 years has made me a very proud business owner.
What challenges do you face as a woman in your industry?
My industry is predominantly female. We face the risk of large corporates moving into our industry and cutting the opportunities for small female-run business. I believe if women can stand together against the challenges in our industry, we will go a long way to ensuring best practice and that patient care is kept at the forefront of our profession.
Who has been your mentor, or what inspires you in your professional and personal life?
My parents have been significant in influencing and supporting my business decisions over the years.
Do you have any other achievements, comments or advice for women you’d like to share?
Women need to uplift and support other women in their industry and community. I try to buy gifts from small female-run businesses. They are typically bespoke and personal and I feel gratified knowing that I am contributing to the financial support of a female-run business.
