In celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March, we proudly feature interviews with resilient women who embody social, economic, cultural and professional achievements. These women are wonderful examples of 2021’s campaign theme: Choose to Challenge. A challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge, comes change. Their stories highlight the importance and power of women supporting women and how their rise to success was made possible through the upliftment of others.
Lead coach at People Dynamics – life and executive coaching for businesses and individuals, including emotional intelligence training.
What is your background, what industry do you work in now, and how long have you worked in this industry?
I come from a training and counselling background and have been in the people industry for 30 years. I started at Life Line East Rand, then managed the CSI bursary programme for Emperor’s Palace from 2001 to 2020. I am currently Lead Coach at People Dynamics.
What do you love about what you do?
I get great joy from helping people deal with workplace and personnel issues. To witness that “lightbulb” moment is very inspiring.
What are the professional and/or personal achievements you’re most proud of?
A real achievement for me was to assist Lifeline in accessing funding from the Department Of Health. I was also privileged to assist with the HIV/AIDS counselling in the 1990s.
I was given the opportunity to design a wrap-around bursary programme that would assist young bursary recipients from disadvantaged backgrounds graduate from top universities and create new lives for themselves.
I was also very proud to assist learner electricians to qualify in the trade.
What challenges do you face as a woman in your industry?
The lack of camaraderie and having to do things alone was very challenging. I overcame this by developing a network of support to assist me.
What advice could you share with young women entering a male-dominated profession?
This industry is not male-dominated but corporate executives are still mostly male and control the budgets.
My advice to young women would be to practise motivating their request in a scientific manner as this resonates with the male management and to never give up on your goals.
Who has been your mentor, or what inspires you in your professional and personal life?
I have been fortunate to have many mentors in the past 30 years, Femke Snyman and John Rayneard at Lifeline, Nigel Atherton at Peermont and Elaine Thompson from People Dynamics.
Do you have any other achievements, comments or advice for women you’d like to share?
Always be humble and never forget your dreams. Sometimes your path may not be straight, but if you have a clear vision you will be able to persevere and succeed.
