Do Digital’s International Women’s Day Featured Guest – Taryn Seegers, CHOC

In celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March, we proudly feature interviews with resilient women who embody social, economic, cultural and professional achievements. These women are wonderful examples of 2021’s campaign theme: Choose to Challenge. A challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge, comes change. Their stories highlight the importance and power of women supporting women and how their rise to success was made possible through the upliftment of others.

What is your background, what industry do you work in now, and how long have you worked in this industry?

My career started at a marketing company where I realised my passion for events and people. I then moved to a non-profit company and that is where my love for doing something greater than yourself started. I have since been in the non-profit space for the last 9 years.

What do you love about what you do?

Childhood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders are illnesses that affect not only the child but also the whole family. CHOC contributes to the well-being of these children and their parents and families whilst at the same time providing support to the government hospitals through a holistic range of programmes. In a small way the work that I do makes a difference to a family. I fully believe in the organisation I work for and the work that they do.

What are the professional and/or personal achievements you’re most proud of?

The launch of Flip Flop day which a wonderful colleague, Linda and I, brought to life.

What challenges do you face as a woman in your industry?

As a woman with a family very dear to my heart I am aware of how important family is. Seeing families go through the cancer journey and it affect the family unit is devastating. I would never wish for my nephew to go through something like this and I know that if he ever did, I would want support from an organisation like CHOC. As an organisation with many ladies involved, I feel that we understand, we have the empathy and the love that many mothers relate to.

When a family goes through the childhood cancer journey, it is a very personal one. Allowing us to walk with them takes a certain amount of trust.
